Eddie | Male | African-American | Age: 27 - 36
African American. Age may be anywhere from late 20's to mid 30's. A wiry fast eyed Black Man; Priest's partner in the drug trade and "main boy" out of a family fifty strong, out on the streets working for them; Eddie lives the "Street Life", thieving, selling drugs, shooting craps, and he loves, as he describes it, "green money and new pussy." Volatile and vengeful; he does not support Priest's plan to get out - in fact, when the Mafia gets involved he betrays Priest and sides with the Mafia against him. He takes hold of any modicum of power that comes within his grasp and uses it for personal financial gain and to murder anyone he feels has crossed him. Must be a great actor, sing well, and be able to move with great style and rhythm. Must be familiar with music of the period and be able to sing this music with great passion; must be able to dance or move well.
Fat Freddy | Male | African-American | Age: 20 - 29
African American in his 20's. Physically round and heavyset. A loveable idiot, but with heterosexual passion. An innocent in over his head in the underground drug trade of 1970's Harlem. Earnest and childlike; very heartful and loveable, he is passionately in love with a prostitute and ultimately risks his life to stand by her. (Subject of the well-known song, "Freddie's Dead"). Must be familiar with music of the period and be able to sing this music with great passion and style and be able to move well.
Georgia | Female | African-American | Age: 20 - 30 | Role Type: Leading
African American, 20's - 30's. LEAD ROLE. A fabulous singer, the headline performer at Harlem Nightclub. Has great beauty and sexual energy. She is the feminine complement to Priest's prowess. Gentle and loving; sexy and smart; courageous - she matches him in sexuality, fearlessness and heart. College educated, she is "the little shining light of hope" in Priest's dark life that guides him to freedom and a new life. Must be a strong actress able to handle the sole Female Lead in the show (Book scenes and solos). Vocally, she must incorporate skills of all the great female vocalists of the 1970's: high belt; sparkling high notes; rich throaty alto register; soulful phrasing; the singing required is honest 1970's rb (no post-Mariah riffing!). The role is a star Rhythm and Blues professional singer, so she must have that extra degree of vocal and performance polish.
Priest aka Super Fly | Male | African-American | Age: 27 - 43 | Role Type: Leading
African American. Age: May be anywhere from late 20's to early 40's. LEAD ROLE. Must be a Great Singer; tall and extremely sexy. His sexual energy is smooth and powerful. He is the very personification of cool. Fearless, with a great sense of style. The ultimate alpha male. PRIEST is at home in the Harlem streets of the 1970's. Described as "a drug pusher, a stick-up artist and a child of the ghetto," he truly beats the system, outsmarting the corrupt police force so that he can break free and start a new life. Though some may find him despicable, he is the unlikely hero; Must have the stature and physique to play this iconic wide-brimmed hat and chinchilla-coat wearing style; vocally actor MUST be a very strong and romantic Rhythm and Blues Vocalist with a strong high belt and Rhythm and Blues falsetto above that. A first-class singer with honesty and integrity - someone who will display alpha-male essence more than vocal tricks. The singing required is honest 1970's Rhythm and Blues
Riordan | Male | Caucasian | Age: 46 - 59
Caucasian; age may be anywhere from late 40's to late 50's. Police Officer in charge of Street Investigations; He appears the typical white collar police executive, but he is also the kingpin of the Harlem Drug trade. Capable of great power and command. Must be able to sing, as well as have some movement ability.
Scatter | Male | African-American | Age: 60 - 69
African American in his 60's. Priest's mentor who gave him entry into the world of the Mafia, very much like his father to Priest, he is now retired from the drug trade and runs a restaurant/nightclub in Harlem. Warm and fatherly toward Priest, he is also described as a 'ruthless individual (who would) kill you for spitting', he is nothing to mess with. Must be familiar with music of the period and be able to sing this music with great passion; and be able to move well.
