River of Fundament - Feature Film. River of Fundament is an art film collaboration between artist/filmmaker Matthew Barney and composer Jonathan Bepler, which combines cinema with elements of live performance and opera. It will be presented as an evening length projection on film in opera houses and theaters around the world. River of Fundament is loosely based on Norman Mailer's novel, Ancient Evenings, which is set in ancient Egypt, though told in a very contemporary way. The depiction of Mailer's Egypt is violent, erotic, and humorous in a way that feels more like a dystopian mafia/family drama set in New York City in the 80's. This project will combine cinema with elements of live performance and opera and will be set in present day New York. The structure of the film is similar to that of a conventional musical focused around a central scene, which gives the story its narration. This central scene is Norman Mailer's wake, which is set at the late author's apartment in Brooklyn Heights, NY.

She is established as a 10 year old girl, and has a second iteration as an adult, who will be played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Talent must be natural, authentic, genuine, with no effusive charm. MUST be a strong singer. No previous acting experience necessary, but talent will need to learn lines. Please submit a vocal sample, video and audio samples, or links to the samples. NOTE: This film project contains elements of graphic nudity. However these scenes will be shot separately and sequenced apart from those featuring the young actress. However, please do not submit if you aren't comfortable with the role or project. Note: Please do not submit if you previously did.
