| Video Reel RequiredStanley Hayami was just your ordinary American teenager, beginning a diary about his quest to get good grades in school and his aspirations to become an artist or writer. His ambitions for the future echoed that of so many high school students who were coming of age in America in the 1940s, however, in Hayami's case there was one critical difference - he was writing from inside the Heart Mountain concentration camp, where he and his family were imprisoned against their will in 1942. By 1944, Hayami was drafted into the legendary U.S. Army 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team and continued to document his experience by writing letters back home to his family. At the age of 19, Hayami was killed in battle while trying to rescue a fellow soldier, but his legacy lives on through his diary and letters.
