Getting the Most out of NYCastings - Submitting
We are glad you have chosen to use NYCastings as a tool to help you with your career, and we want you to know that we want you to succeed as much as you do. In fact our business depends on this site helping you book more work as a talent. Below are some helpful do's and don'ts to help you achieve better results when using our service.
Submitting to Jobs or Talent reps:
The most important thing here is to submit to only projects or reps that are requesting your type or who handle the types of work you're looking for. Without a doubt the #1 biggest pet peeve of everyone - Casting Directors, Agents, Managers, Producers, etc. is getting a submission from a person who is clearly not what they asked for. Not only have you wasted your time and theirs but since most of these clients use this site on a consistent basis, you may likely be out of the running for all future projects they list if they remember you. The respect you give to a person is the same as you receive.
Writing cover notes:
The best cover notes are short and to the point, generally addressing that after reading the breakdown you have found that you are a great choice for 1 of the characters or types listed. Also you would like to let them know that you are available on the casting and shoot dates.
Many times in a casting breakdown it may ask you to list certain pieces of information about yourself such as:
- Please list in your cover note that you are a real certified doctor.
- Please list in your cover note what type of car you own.
- Please list in your cover note that you have a tuxedo.
- Please list in your cover note what type of martial arts experience you have.
If you ever see this, make sure you address it because the casting director has specifically asked for this information, and needs the answer as the job will depend on it.
A few examples:
Greetings Casting Director, I am submitting to the role of "XXXXX," as I think I'm a great match to the description listed, and I'm free on the casting date & shoots dates listed. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi, I am submitting to this project because I'm a perfect match for the role of "XXXXX." As mentioned, I do speak fluent French, and have ample teleprompter experience. I'm happy to audition for the role whenever needed.
Dear Casting, I'm an excellent choice for the "Martial Arts Instructor" in your film because I'm a 5th degree black belt who has been teaching Kung Fu for the last 10 years. You can refer to my resume for past martial arts films that I've been in as well as other training. I feel I can bring much to the role and would love to audition for the film any time needed.
Generally, speaking in a positive tone will yield the best response, and tells the casting director, that you're probably going to be pleasant to work with. Also attention to details of the casting will help get the best response.
No no's: Never copy and paste generic text or resume information into your cover notes on this site. The formatting will not stay the same so all text will be one continuous line. Also links to other sites will not work.
