Starting Fresh – Male/Female – Drama

“It’s funny…you know, we talk about ‘roots’ as if they’re a lifeline, anchoring us to our past. But sometimes, they’re chains, aren’t they? They can hold you down, keep you from soaring to places you never knew existed. 1-2 Min.

(Deep breath. The actor stares into the middle distance, lost in thought, before finally speaking.)

“It’s funny…you know, we talk about ‘roots’ as if they’re a lifeline, anchoring us to our past. But sometimes, they’re chains, aren’t they? They can hold you down, keep you from soaring to places you never knew existed.

I’ve always been…well, I’ve always been the ‘safe’ one in the family. The steady hand. The calm in the storm. But what happens when the storm is within you? When you’re craving not for calm, but for the electricity of a thunderbolt, the whirl of a tempest?

My family…I love them. I love them so much it hurts. But staying isn’t about love anymore, it’s about obligation, it’s about expectation, it’s about the familiarity of the known. But is that enough? Is that what life is meant to be? A replay of yesteryears?

I need more. I need…a fresh start. A new town, where no one knows my name, my story, my past. A place where I can rewrite the narrative of my life, without the burden of a preface already written. I can almost feel the liberation of anonymity, the joy of exploration, the thrill of discovery.

But still, it’s terrifying. Walking away from everything I’ve ever known, everyone I’ve ever loved. It’s a risk, a huge one. But isn’t that what life’s about? Embracing the uncertainty, taking that leap of faith, daring to dream? If I fail, I fail. But at least I’ll fail having tried. Having dared to step out of the shadow of expectation into the light of possibility.

So, as the sun sets on this chapter of my life, I look forward to the dawn of a new one. I look forward to the new town, the fresh start. And as I close this door behind me, I leave with a heart full of gratitude, eyes full of hope, and a spirit ready for whatever lies ahead.”

(End scene.)
